Street Savvy Dog Rescue - Our Fear Free Training Commitment

At Street Savvy Dog Rescue, we are committed to adopting out only to families and individuals who share our philosophy of compassionate, science-backed training methods. We do not adopt dogs out to anyone using or planning to use aversive training methods, including prong collars, pinch collars, choke collars, shock collars (E collars), citronella spray, or other forms of punishment-based tools such as spray bottles. We believe that building trust, not fear, is essential for the well-being and rehabilitation of rescue dogs. Adopting a dog from Street Savvy Dog Rescue means joining a community dedicated to humane, Fear Free training practices.

Why We Prohibit

Aversive Methods

Scientific research has shown that training methods involving punishment or discomfort often lead to detrimental psychological and physical effects on dogs. Instead of improving behavior, these methods can create fear, anxiety, and even aggression. Studies indicate that aversive tools, like shock collars, often escalate dogs' stress levels, triggering their "fight or flight" responses.

This can lead to long-term consequences, such as:

  • Increased Aggression and Reactivity: Dogs trained with aversive tools may become defensive or aggressive, viewing people or other dogs as threats instead of friends
  • Anxiety and Fearfulness: Dogs can develop generalized anxiety or phobias, even in situations unrelated to training, which harms their quality of life and trust in humans.
Physical and Psychological Damage: Choke and prong collars can physically harm a dog's neck and spine, while punishment techniques risk lasting psychological damage, causing dogs to be on constant alert.

Fear Free training—using rewards, patience, and understanding—leads to lasting behavior changes without compromising the dog’s emotional health.

Here’s what Fear Free training includes:

  • Positive Reinforcement: By rewarding dogs with treats, toys, and praise, Fear Free training reinforces desirable behaviors, encouraging dogs to repeat them out of joy rather than fear.
  • Gradual Desensitization: We use methods that gently expose dogs to new environments or stimuli, helping them become more comfortable and confident over time.
  • Zero Tolerance for Aversive Tools: We prohibit prong, pinch, choke, or shock collars and any tools designed to instill fear or discomfort. Only gentle, dog-centered techniques are allowed.
  • Behavioral Understanding: Our recommended trainers have in-depth knowledge of dog psychology and adapt each training session to suit the unique needs of each dog, ensuring a positive experience..
